Quit the Quitting Attitude: Embracing Dedication and Perseverance for Success

4 min readNov 3, 2023

We all have experienced it at some point in our lives — the excitement of embarking on a new journey, the rush of enthusiasm as we dive into learning something new, be it playing an instrument, dancing, or engaging in a sport. But as time passes, that initial excitements often fizzles out, leaving us with half-finished projects and dashed dreams. This pattern of starting with zeal only to quit halfway is what I refer to as the “quitting attitude,” and it’s a cycle that can hinder personal growth and lower down our confidence.

The Dip: The biggest results are gained after continuing to exert effort during a period when less results are obtained.

In various articles, I’ve discussed the concept of the “Dip” phase in learning. It’s that point in the learning curve where progress seems to plateau, challenges appear insurmountable, and enthusiasm wanes. Many of us fall victim to the dip, using it as a justification to quit. However, it’s crucial to recognize that the dip is not an insurmountable obstacle, but rather a natural part of the learning process. It’s the point where dedication and perseverance come into play.

My own experiences with the quitting attitude left me with lowered confidence and self-doubt. The habit of quitting became ingrained, and I began questioning my ability to see anything through to completion. However, there came a turning point when I realized that quitting wasn’t the answer — but quitting the quiting attitude was.

I made a conscious decision to shift my mindset. I committed to finishing what I started, regardless of the challenges that arose. It wasn’t about the size of the project; it was about cultivating the determination to see it through. This newfound attitude manifested in a small hobby project, but it was a turning point. This time, I was resolute in my commitment to persevere.

With this change in mindset, I embarked on the journey of learning to code. The path wasn’t without its difficulties. There were moments of frustration and doubt, but the commitment to quit the quoting attitude kept me moving forward. Over the course of several years, I transformed from a novice to a proficient full-stack developer, all because I chose not to quit when faced with challenges.

A key lesson I learned is that the decision not to quit must be coupled with a genuine and unwavering interest in the endeavor. It’s important to be honest with yourself about your level of commitment. Choosing something you’re not truly passionate about significantly increases the likelihood of quitting when the going gets tough.

One more example, I set a goal this year to publish at least one blog a month. Just a blog in whole month which consists of around 30 days seems an easy task to achieve, yet, not easy to maintain. By the time I am writing this, it is already November and I have published 6 articles so far this year. Meaning, I am still due to 4 more and I did miss few months. However, I am not quitting this, and by December, I am committed to at least publish 12 articles no matter what.

The process of embracing the “no quitting” mindset also requires a conscious effort to eliminate the mere possibility of quitting from your thoughts. This means reframing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than as reasons to give up. By maintaining a focused and determined outlook, you can navigate the dip and come out stronger on the other side.

Continuing from the example, when I will complete 12 articles in a year challenge, it will make my base even stronger and will set me to “I can do this” attitude in future.

In conclusion, the journey to success is paved with challenges, plateaus, and moments of doubt. The quitting attitude, where we start with enthusiasm only to quit prematurely, can hinder our growth and hinder our potential. Embracing dedication, perseverance, and a genuine interest in our pursuits can propel us beyond the dip and towards achieving our goals. The transformation that can occur when we choose not to quit is a testament to the power of the human spirit and its capacity for growth. So, let’s quit the quitting attitude and instead embark on a path of unwavering determination and self-belief.
